According to industry leaders, it official, the trucking & transportation peak season is upon us, and the forecast looks....outstanding.
Subsequently, many industry leaders feel as though the current numbers in the industry are unprecedented, and this is due largely in part, because the "freight economy...continues to be extraordinarily strong," according a report written by Donald Broughton, founder of Broughton Capital. Also, the Cass Freight Index Report, from Cass Information Systems, shows the freight economy up 15% over its former posting of 7.2% annual gain. If that isn't causes for great cheer, note the comments from two independent reports; Portland, Ore —based freight marketplace platform and DAT, both state that, "June saw the highest spot market rates on record." All these numbers and information shows, how strong the freight industry is now and will be, into the near future. After all, the freight economy is doing well, this means the American economy is doing well also.
But this news is a mixed bag of hope for some, and despair for others. Good news for the many carriers out there; independent owner operators, the small trucking companies, the hot shot carriers, as well as, the LTL- less-than-truckload, because for many years, their compensation took back seat to other industry professionals. This is sad news for the shippers, manufacturers, and distributors, who now have to shell-out more, to get the job down. Shipper might even have to consider using other avenues, like breaking down a truckload shipment, into a less-than-truckload shipment, to get freight delivered. The industry as a whole, is short some 50,000 truck drivers, but the U.S. DOT might have a solution.
There are many changes on the horizon in the freight industry, too many almost to keep track of, but I was reading about an interesting one in the August 2018 issue of Logistics
Management magazine. The article states that, the U.S DOT is slated to launch a new pilot program, you see the FMCSA-Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration is seeking, 200 drivers from at least 70 trucking companies." The new program fall under Section 8404 of the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act, where they will permit a limited number of individuals, to operate large trucks in interstate commerce. The awesome thing about this new program is they're going to allow, for the first time ever, 18-20 year old, who possess the U.S. military equivalent of a CDL, to participate in the program. The program is designed to allow our young military veterans, the chance to transfer their extensive training into a good paying job or career, and to also try and alleviate the overwhelming driver shortage in the U.S. I feel as though, if they are good enough to handle expensive military equipment and that they put their lives on the line to defend our nation, then they are good enough to be a commercial carrier.
